TUWI FAQ: Is Baby Alpaca Wool Vegan Friendly?
We recently covered whether alpaca wool is cruelty-free (guess what? It is!), but you may now be wondering is alpaca wool vegan friendly?
Well, as with all vegans this completely depends on your views on the topic. Are you vegan to help the environment? Are you vegan for health reasons? Or are you vegan to help protect the animals? Depending on which area(s) a vegan fall into will depend on the views of whether or not alpaca wool is vegan friendly.
Is Alpaca Wool Vegan Friendly For Those Wanting To Save The Environment?
Essentially, if vegan views are based on the need to save the environment, it is likely that these people would consider alpaca wool as vegan-friendly thanks to its sustainability, especially in comparison to its counterpart, cashmere.
As we are coming into the winter, people will be beginning looking for clothes and accessories to help keep them warm in the colder months. Unfortunately, this brings with it some challenges as many items are made with synthetic materials that can be harmful to the environment, or if they are buying wool items the high street offers very little in terms of a sustainable option.
However, Tuwi offers a range of accessories and baby alpaca baby clothes to keep you and your children warm, whilst doing your bit to help the environment. You see, the alpaca yarn we use is from Peru and over there, alpacas are able to roam free. The wool we use is harvested during the warmer months of the year when alpacas are happy to lose their coats, which they no longer need. After that, the alpacas are released back into the wild, rather than kept and reared on a farm.
Again, much like those wanting to save the environment, dietary vegans are also likely to consider alpaca wool vegan friendly. When somebody is a vegan through their diet, this doesn’t always mean that they refrain from using animal products in other aspects of their lives.
It’s no surprise that veganism is becoming popular due to the many health benefits that it provides; such as lowering the rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. However, there’s nothing to say that a dietary vegan can’t wear alpaca wool or other forms of animal-derived products such as leather.

Is Alpaca Wool Vegan Friendly For Those Who Want To Protect The Animals?
Well… this is where things can get confusing. The obtainment of alpaca wool is cruelty-free and the alpacas live in their natural habitat meaning they live a completely normal life. They are sheared once a year in the summer months, where they are happily shorn before being sent back into the wild. You may be thinking “well, how do you obtain their fur? Surely, that isn’t cruelty-free.”. Well, it is. We only obtain the fur from alpacas that have died from natural causes, meaning that no alpacas are harmed in the production of Tuwi products. However, technically vegans who make this choice to protect the animals would avoid animal products altogether.
So, is alpaca wool vegan friendly for those looking to protect the animals? This is a choice that completely is left down to the individual and what they see as being the right answer in terms of their ethics.
We hope that this article has helped you to understand that there is no simple black and white answer to the question ‘is alpaca wool vegan friendly?’.
